Artist Mom Dressed Her Baby as World Worst Dictators

Danish-Norwegian artist Nina Maria Kleivan dresses her baby up as the worst dictators of the 20th century because, after all, "Even my daughter could end up ruling Denmark with an iron fist." That baby probably has a better-than-average chance, yes.

Saddam Hussein

Ruhollah Khomeini

Benito Mussolini

Adolf Hitler
Kleivan's father was a member of the Norwegian resistance against the Nazis, and held captive in a prison camp, so she felt like she "had a right" to explore the subject

Chairman Mao

Joseph Stalin
"When all you see is a picture, Stalin could've been anyone's kind grandfather. You can't see the millions of people on his conscience or what a paranoid, dreadful human being he was"

Idi Amin

Augusto Pinochet
She said: "we are all born as a blank slate, who knows who we will become. I wanted people to think about where tremendous evil comes from".
The pictures have been exhibited in Denmark, Sweden, Italy and Germany.

That's not art, and it doesn't "make you think". If I met this pretentious piece of trash on the street I would punch her in the back of the head.

wow i don't think those dictators were evil at all they were sick if you read up on them most of them do have mental disorders no-one is necessarily evil,i hate jew's but i am not a nazi but yes i am german!
when she says think of where evil comes from there actually is no point of evil when you think of it there's no good either everyone's a little messed up in the head, hey! a quick fact: i have 'schizophrenia' am i evil? no i am not i wasn't diagnosed but i do have hallucinations its not evil that i have it or good it just gives me comfort because i have had imaginary friends and it just makes me feel good but sometimes sad too because there's scary ones too.

AND TO ADD she is hardly an artist anyone can dress up babys up and take a picture of them..

i saw a picture of a toddler in a hitler costume before online already idea of hers she stole from other people obviously the photos very easy to take.
grade A job being S being the highest :|

is it just me or does the baby look stupid?

Anonymous said...

she is sick what was she thinking

Anonymous said...

why does it look like the baby is tacked to a wall?

Anonymous said...

You forgot Bush and Cheney.

Anonymous said...

So it's okay for her to do this, yet when a muslim couple dressed their baby as a suicide bomber everyone screamed "SHOCK! OH NO! THEM CRAZY MUSLIMS!" because obviously only we're allowed a sense of "humour".

Listen. You can't say something is art or it isn't. Every artist, art historian, art professor, etc. says this as well as I. Now, you can HATE or DISLIKE or LOVE a piece of art but you can't say something isn't art, well, you CAN say it but that makes you an ignorant moron. Now, as an artist, I wouldn't say this was imaginative or creative but she invoked reactions and that's saying something. Everyone who has something to say about her work is fueling the fire that is the controversy surrounding the photographs. It's art. I don't like it however because it's just boring and not that creative. Seemed as if she was running low on ideas and this was the best she came up with.

Question: How in the hell can a BABY look stupid? Really? of course they're stupid. THEIR BRAINS AREN'T FULLY DEVELOPED AS AN ADULT'S BRAIN. moron.

Also, the baby looked like it was tacked on the wall because the photograph was taken from an aerial perspective meaning the baby was laying on the floor. God! All of you are geniuses! You must make your parents so proud.

who cares

Thats cute. now you can add Obama

I think it's interesting even if a bit grotesque. As she says, we all start out as blank slate babies even if we grow up to be a fascist dictator or maybe just complete douche bag in general lol.

If she is an artist, she could have at least taken higher quality photos.

Silvio Guspini said...

bush wasnt a dictator. he dictated nothing. he did what YOU told him to. either by approving, or by not resisting.

that being said...i think thats a cute and interesting idea. nobody's born evil. you chose to be an asshole. and you have to do it every day over and over again.

Anonymous said...

Where's Obama?

Anonymous said...

should have done pol pot

Anonymous said...

One might argue that all of the above fit said description, Silvio Guspini. I highly doubt that many of them wouldn't have gotten anywhere without, at least, initial approval from respective countries or governments of respective countries. That said, Bush did many things that the American public was unaware of; an excellent documentary on the subject is "Why We Fight," if you care to be informed on the subject.

Anonymous, June 19th: You've just confirmed everything I suspected about artists.

"Anonymous said...

I think someone doesn't know what a dictator is...

Anonymous said...

Augusto Pinochet wasn't so much a dictator as people think... I live in Chile and the perception is actually 50/50. He did amazing things for a backward country. The problem was that he went a bit over board with the civil war in the country and didn't let go of the power earlier. But he wasn't evil... Chile would be just another incredibly poor south american country with out him.

cmon... what about Pol Pot, he puts Idi Amin to shame

CK said...

Pretty funny - but I could do without the swastika.

Anonymous said...

Where is Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, Jorge Rafael Videla, Franco? An to the ignorants, nor Bush or Obama are dictators.

Daily Dawdle said...

Awesome series. Brilliant!

Anonymous said...

Not art and more-than-very creepy. Rather distasteful to dress your child as a dictator that the father had been working against.

Anonymous said...

what, no Kim Jong Il?

caitlin kenney said...

there is nothing sick about these pictures.
no one needs to feel they have a right to have costumes of historical figures.
oh lord forbid someone see a picture and be upset.
its creative, its a cute baby, and those were real people.
you can disagree on politics and the effect they have on people, but this wasn't making a political statement...

To the guy who called everyone morons for saying the baby looks stupid, i agree that their brains arent fully developed but the fact that you believe this is art BLOWS my mind! If you had even the slightest bit of decent morals you would not take a helpless baby and dress him up as a killer and murder (granted that some of these dictators are not). Also if you are saying that everyone has their own opinion on what whether it is good art or bad art why arent they allowed to have their own opinion on if they consider it art or not? and who are you to call them morons for their opinion! I also believe the sarcastic remark that said that everyone must have made their parents proud was pathetic. The fact that you get so heated about whether not it is art, and the fact that everyone has their own opinions (even though according to you they can have their own opinion but if they do they are morons) leads me to a few different conclusions: 1) you are a attention craving artist. 2) your art gets criticized a lot for not being true art. or 3) your just pathetic and want some attention.

Although these babies are looking nice but i think that babies look cute in cloths that are especially design for them. Thanks for posting.

so, does this make her the source of all evil?

Anonymous said...

'Your a douche, it made me think... it made me think these are all photoshoped. I can tell by the pixels.'

The pixels. How the hell can you tell by the pixels? That's a trolls excuse.

Anonymous said...

It's obviously started a controversy so it's art. It's cute, so it's art. It was thought up by a human, so it's art.
I think the point of this piece is that the baby doesn't know anything about the dictators he's being portrayed as. Babies only veer in response to love, those who love them. Love is the driving force of the world, and dictators are humans too. They were also once helpless babies who responded to love. What they did with the love they received was conveyed by the love they ensued upon the world, regardless of it's form. That is all =)

Anonymous said...

Kim Jong Il anyone?

Anonymous said...

I'm not contributing to the art debate but I think she's a bad mother not respecting the poor baby's privacy. Her daughter wasn't asked whether she anted to be publicly displayed like that. Do you think she would have agreed?
Oh, and anyone who says babies make the world evil or look stupid is a moron who will hopefully never have children of their own.
